ISF 2020: What’s it all about?

28th - 30th January, 2020

The Introduction to Sustainable Fishing programme provides fishermen and others with an interest in productive fisheries with an opportunity to learn how fishery science and management processes are applied in England.

We bring together leading fishermen, scientists, managers and other industry professionals to learn from each other, share insight and build a common language around fisheries. Participants leave the programme empowered and better prepared to be a voice in UK fisheries science and management.

The programme is free for fishermen to attend – we cover all catering and accommodation costs. We can also pay for most reasonable travel costs. Your only commitment is time.

Who is this for?

The ISF2020 programme is tailored specifically to inshore fishermen and brings commercial, charter and recreational fishermen together with scientists, managers and other marine resource professionals to learn, share and network in a neutral and professional setting.

ISF2020 is based in London. We will be using two sites: Hilton Docklands Hotel and Billingsgate Market, the UK’s largest wholesale fish market.

What's in it for me?

Fishing is a tough, complex industry; science and management are increasingly important and modern fishermen need to be able to navigate the processes that govern their businesses to be successful.

ISF2020 will bring you up to speed with the very latest developments in fisheries science and management and put you in the know. The programme has been built by fishermen and scientists working together, you don’t need any prior knowledge or understanding. We will draw and build on where you are right now – all you need is a willing spirit and a desire to participate in this dialogue.

What will I be doing on the programme?

You will participate in a range of activities, including:

  1. Learning: up-to-the-minute presentations and open-dialogue with leading fisheries professionals.
  2. Doing: practical activities like planning a scientific survey, removing ear-bones from fish, viewing demonstrations and working on tasks with fellow fishermen.
  3. Networking: extended time to network, socialise and relax with like-minded people. This is a unique opportunity to dig deep in to the worlds of fisheries science and management, and have fun at the same time.
  4. Influencing: the industry professionals who contribute to the programme hugely value the insights they gain from talking and working alongside fishermen – your voices are heard.
